DESIGN ADVICE FOR THE SEASON

The holiday season brings a lot of stress into many of our lives. Stress about seeing family, making appearances, decorating the house, and in an economy like this; being able to stretch the dollar to buy gifts.

In times like this, many of us begin to stray away from entertaining, as a way to save that extra penny, or avoid the additional tension. But is that really necessary? Isn't there a way to entertain on a penny budget, and do it without freaking out?

Beau Breedlove, of B. E. Breedlove Event Artistry thinks there is a way.

" Entertaining is entertainment. Not just for the guests, but for the host or hostess as well" he states, " And there's no reason you cant have even more fun, or have an even stylish gathering, on a budget."

Beau has been working lightly as an event planner for about two years. Getting his start in Michigan, planning a grand opening party for a small restaurant with a guest list of 700, and hosted by ex-supermodel, Janice Dickenson.

With events as large as grand openings, to money conscious weddings, his experience covers a broad base, and contributes to his ability to advise you of how to have an outstanding party on a dime.

" It's all about the little things. Start out by searching your cupboards, and finding all the applicable ingredients. Anything that you might be able to use for a recipe. Make a list of the items.

DOWNTOWN CHRISTMAS TREES!

You know your neighborhood has everything when you have a christmas tree stand around the corner, right? Well, we have it now!

Glenn Lassen, a resident in the Pearl District, has taken the initiative to bring one of the first Christmas Tree stands to the neighborhood. With big plans to open on November 24th, at NW 14th and Overton, with an additional location at Samaritan Counseling Centers, on NE 12th and Broadway.

With daily deliveries of fresh-cut trees, from the eco-friendly Lassen Tree Farm in Silverton, Oregon, you're sure to find the perfect Noble Fir for your home or office.

One particular point of interest about the Lassen family, is their drive to teach people about the benefits of having a real tree, as opposed to a fake. In reality, the benefits are far greater when choosing a real tree, specificly because of the damage fake trees have on the environment. False trees are nonparishable, and usually have to be taken to landfills after we've had our use of them.

This seasonal business will bring a new feel to the Pearl, and will hopefully become a tradition of seasonal fun and excitement for all of us!

LIGHTING UP THE PEARL

The Pearl District's annual holiday tree has become a social, and community uniting event in Jamison Square. A great time for families to come together, and reunite with neighbors and friends!

This year's lighting will be taking place on November 29th, at 5:00p.m.

The event will be marked by the Oregon Repertory Singers performing. In addition, the lighting will be commenced by a child from the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Orgeon- a heart warming gesture.

Remember to dress warm, and bring a friend!

BREAKING GROUND FOR ENSO

After over two years of planning and preparation, ground was officially broken Friday, at the site of the newest Pearl District rental project, ENSO.

Greg Spezzano, Director of Marketing and Design for Alliance ( the development company responsible for the building), warmly greeted neighbors and acquaintances at the Ground Breaking brunch, held at Bridgeport Brewery Friday morning. While chatting with many of the people he's come to know while learning about the Portland market, he also took the time to introduce himself to new faces.- time was an unfortunate coincidence, as the grand opening of Safeway, directly across the street, was at the same time.

"We plan to open in the first quarter of 2010", Greg said proudly, as he and other Alliance representatives explained the images depicting what Enso will look like at the end of construction; a stunningly modern design conceived by Myhre Group Architects, of Portland.

I was able to nab a few of the men, and get the scoop on how ENSO pairs up to it's competition, most closely being The Wyatt and the newly opened Asa.

Q- Was Alliance's intentions always to have ENSO as an apartment rental building, or did the market affect their plans?

A- " The plan, from the beginning, was to bring a new rental property to the Pearl, but with the finishes and quality of a condominium project."

Q- What is it about ENSO that you hope will make it unique?

A- "A number of things, but most noticeably, our attention to detail. The exterior design is something striking and unique for the area. A combination of sharp lines and protrusions, and creative window placement. That, coupled with the interior design of alternating warm and cool color themes on each floor, will keep us separated from the rest."

Q- Most importantly ( since names always create a whirlwind of speculations, and mispronunciations in the case of the ASA ), what is ENSO, and how did you come to name the building that?

A- "Actually, there was a lot of turmoil in the naming process. The name we originally decided on, was taken by another development. So, we rested on it for days, trying to come to a decision. Meanwhile, we commissioned a piece of art for the building, from a gallery next to our offices in San Francisco. The piece was referred to as an Enso- a circular sculpture, representing the circle of life. The name came up in many conversations over the following days. Then, it just hit us, "ENSO! That's perfect!".

Once completed, ENSO will stand 6 stories, with 5 floors of residential space above ground level retail. And may even be the new Portland home of the gallery that inspired the name.

LIGHTS.....RAIN..... ACTION!!!

They busted out the gear last week, and started lighting the streets of the Pearl for the holiday season. Twinkling lights, illuminated trees, and even the glimmering snowflakes are making their first appearances for the season. Are you ready?

With the financial world in turmoil, it seems like this year's giving season will be a tight one. As a result, many families will be finding new ways to make this time of year special, and in a place like the Pearl, in a city like Portland, it wont be too hard to find some holiday distractions and events.

One, for example, is just making the time to take a cozy evening stroll through the streets of the neighborhood. Maybe with your lover, or someone special, or a friend. Grab a coffee at Starbucks or a tea at TeaZone, and wander through the street, catching the light of all the trees and winter decorations.

Another idea may be to take part in the tree raising or tree lighting at Pioneer Courthouse Square; both of which are just around the corner.

Perhaps you have some creative ideas or suggestions! If you do, feel free to email them to us at
bebreedlove@msn.com, and share the warmth with our other readers.

CHAMBERS @ 916 BRINGS NEW LIFE TO PEARL ART SCENE

The well anticipated opening of Wid Chambers' Chambers @ 916, went off smoothly this week, highlighted with their First Thursday premier.

The project to relocate and reopen the gallery was guided by Chambers, and his new director Martha Morgan, whom based her studies at the renowned L'Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. With a passion for art and design, the pair took a small space ( already painted black and pink), and recreated a home for contemporary art that compares to galleries of New York and Paris.

The stark, white walls allow life to come from the artwork itself, and pull your attention to each piece being presented. An item of particular interest is the video instailation art, located at the back of the gallery. Another unique feature of the gallery, and something that is definitely worth seeing.

Currently, Chambers @ 916 is featuring New York photographer Allen Maertz's Encyclopedia A-L collection, giving new views of how we gain knowledge as a culture, and how we recreate realities.

Even in the Pearl District, where galleries and art are regular pieces of daily life, it's still invigorating to find new spaces, or old galleries with new faces, bringing fresh perspectives and new creativity onto the scene.

LUXURY APARTMENTS GET HIGH SCORES

The Wyatt is the luxury apartment building, located just North of Lovejoy at 12th Ave., in the Pearl. With it's grand architecture and clean red brick, it stands out among the other buildings filling the skyline.

Built to be condos by Bob Ball, the project took a turn south on the selling market, and was sold to a separate company to be marketed as luxury apartments.

Now, as families settle down for the season, and students get comfortable with their new class schedules, you would think that the market for renting has slowed. It has. But above most other buildings, The Wyatt is still moving at full speed, racing to fill their remaining vacant units.

With such a unique selection of floor plans and views, it's easy to see how this building has attracted such a diverse group of residents. From 537sqft studios with captivating views of the city's bridges, to stunning penthouses with views of all of Portland. There's quality and luxury around every corner, and friendly residents and staff top it all off!

When the market is beginning to become saturated with rentals, it's so refreshing to find something that is so unique, and stands out above the rest.

Hold Us a Spot in Line

We may be bargain hunters, but there are few sales we'd actually deem worthy of standing in a line just to enter. Actually, come to think of it, there's really only one: the Lucy warehouse sale.

We've always been huge fans of the Lucy store in the Pearl District (when you live in yoga pants, Lucy items are must-haves). Last year was our first Lucy warehouse sale experience. And it was overwhelming... in a good way. First, we pulled up thinking this was our little secret and it turns out half the city of Portland was there. The line wrapped down the block!

And while this sight would normally send us running for the nearest quaint boutique, we figured we'd give it a shot. Turns out, the line to get into the warehouse was a breeze and in less than 30 minutes we were walking out with enough workout attire to never wear the same yoga pants twice.

So this weekend the Lucy warehouse is holding a moving sale, which we anticipate will rank right up there with their other sales events. And unless one of you offers to save us a spot in line, we'll be lining up early outside the Lucy warehouse for as long as it takes to get inside! (It's a short trek from the Pearl, but trust us, the deals are worth it.)

Service is admirable, helpful and engaging. The space is attractively designed with high-ceilinged stained-glass appointments and a copper still, but the lighting is too low to appreciate the surroundings. In a restaurant touch now as fashionable as butternut squash, diners huddle around table candles trying to make out the menu.

Olea follows its own direction, mostly within the western Mediterranean basin, and goes some interesting places -- as well as some dead ends. But it's usually a trip worth making. Just follow the sign of the horizontal pizza.

Nice to see Olea getting some fresh recognition... now we're craving their pizza!
