This week's Pearl Personality is a guy you need to know, especially in today's real estate and mortgage market. Josh Leake is the owner of Plum Tree Mortgage, based here in the Pearl. But beyond being a source for sound lending advice, he's also strongly involved in the Pearl District neighborhood and business community. Heck, he even named his English bulldog "Pearl," and recently hosted a charity kissing booth for Pets in the Pearl. ("Pearl" was doing the kissing!)

Katy tells us they've already gotten a ton of entries!
Kudos to the team at Ten 01. They've just been invited to host a special dinner at the world-renowned James Beard House in New York City on January 15, 2008.
The planned menu, created by Chef Jack Yoss and Sommelier Erica Landon, is dubbed "From Coast to the Cascades: Oregon's food and wine bounties," and focuses on farm-to-table cuisine, paired with selections from St. Innocent and Francis Tannahill wineries.
No need to book a flight to experience it though. Ten 01 will be serving the full James Beard House menu for guests to sample on two occasions: November 29, 2007 and January 21, 2008. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. and is $125 per person. Make your reservation soon, as these events will likely fill up quickly! The full menu after the break...

We returned from vacation about a week ago and are only now feeling back in the swing of things. That's the irony of vacations. You work your arse off to prepare to leave; then worry about work while you're gone... continuing to check email and take calls from clients and colleagues; and finally, return home to a massive pile of work that makes you wonder whether the vacation was really worth taking. *sigh* In all honesty though, it was good for us, despite the "catch-up" we're playing now.
It seems like SO much has happened while we were gone... we'll finish wading through emails and start posting some updates ASAP. Hope everyone is enjoying this gorgeous weather!
Psst... if you're an early riser, tune to KGW-TV (ch. 8) tomorrow morning (Wed., Oct. 10) between 5 - 7 a.m. KGW's entertainment reporter, Drew Carney, will be spending the morning at Whole Foods in the Pearl to preview this weekend's "Pear... with a Flair" event. We hear several lucky passers-by will get the chance to earn Whole Foods gift certificates. That is... if you know what Oregon's State Fruit is.
Ten 01's resident mixologist Kelley Swenson will also be on hand for the live TV segments, demonstrating how pears can be incorporated into fresh drinks or used as beautiful drink garnishes.
Here's the full description of Whole Foods' upcoming pear event, which takes place this Saturday, Oct. 13th from 12 - 4 p.m., only at the Pearl location:
Pear...with a Flair
At Whole Foods Market we celebrate the joy of food and what food could be more impressive than our state fruit, the pear?! With more than 370 pear growers in our state producing about 800 million pears a year, it's no wonder this juicy fruit is a fall favorite. Every department around the store will be offering a delectable pear pairing for you to sample. In addition, free pear tasting classes with Chef Steve will be offered in our Salud! Kitchen at Noon and 2:00 p.m.
The freestanding building in front of the Elizabeth Lofts has either been empty or under construction for so long, we pretty much stopped paying attention. But it looks as though Isabel is finally, almost, ready to open.
Isabel Cruz, the restaurant's namesake, is releasing her first cookbook, Isabel's Cantina, at the same time. Join Powell's Books and Isabel Cruz on Wednesday, Oct. 10th from 5 - 6:30 p.m., for a special reception celebrating the book, as well as to get a preview and tasting of the new restaurant.
From Powell's:
Restaurateur/chef Isabel Cruz has earned acclaim over a decade for her signature Latin/Asian fusion style which she now brings to Portland. Her new restaurant, Isabel (in Portland’s Pearl District), relies on the bold flavored ingredients common to both Latin and Asian cuisines—like mangoes, limes, chiles, mint, ginger, coconut, and cilantro—creating fresh, delicious dishes with an eye for health.
The new Isabel restaurant is located at 330 NW 10th Ave. in the Pearl District.
Willamette Week reports that the Elizabeth Lofts condos are suing one of their own. Apparently the bar Trust...A Lounge, located on the building's SE corner, is falling out of favor with the neighbors. Elizabeth Lofts contends the bar's late hours and smoking patrons are ruining the reputation of the building. Anyone know if the bar owns or leases its space? This should get interesting...
Any event that combines massage + psychic readings + costumes sounds fun, even if we can't technically join in...
This Friday, Oct. 5, Umpqua Bank is hosting "Spoil A Pet" Day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., featuring a pet psychic, a pet masseuse, the Pearl Retriever, and OHS dogs available for adoption (between 11 am – 3 pm only). Pets are encouraged to come in Halloween costumes. All services for the day are complimentary.
Umpqua Bank is located at 1241 SW 10th Ave. in the Pearl District right outside the Pearl District.
Edited to Add: sorry for any confusion! We'd been told about this event by numerous people and ended up crossing our wires. It's being held at their downtown location (across from Safeway), rather than in the Pearl. Can you tell we're on vacation?
