Pearl Personality: Katy Kippen

This week's Pearl Personality is living our fashion dream: she's part-owner and buyer for Nolita, our all-time-favorite shop for designer denim (and so much more). Katy's passions, however, go way beyond chic jeans, which makes us like her even more.

Clothing Buyer / Partner - Nolita

Favorites in the Pearl
Shop: Bubble for Irene Van Ryb, Physical Element for Cop.Copine, Le Train Bleu for Cacharel, Nolita for Mike + Chris & Proportion of Blu denim, Relish for gifts-all sorts.

Restaurant: Andina for the atmosphere, Piazza Italia for Penne Arrabiata, Oba for Cajun Fries, Apotheke for European beers and Caleb, the owner---he’s so nice!

Park: Definitely the quiet park (Tanner Springs) on 10th & Northrup for reading the latest novel (loved Heidi Julavit’s The Uses of Enchantment).

I also like the plantings/benches between 10th & 11th on Irving with the Magnolias, Hydrangeas, & Arbutus trees. I am a plant nut and I adore walking through that area on a short break from work.

There are also some huge Gunnera (huge "dinosaur plants") inside the courtyard of the 10th & Hoyt building worth checking out. I don’t think I’m technically supposed to be there, but when the gates are open I sneak in and eat my lunch.

Gallery: I am weird with galleries-I feel like the paintings are staring at me. I haven’t been to as many as I should.

Vino Paradiso Hosts Eerie “Funeral Portraits”

Halloween is just around the corner, but you won’t have to visit a haunted house to get a little creeped out. One of our favorite wine bars is hosting artist Mike Egan’s dark, yet beautiful work. Egan’s artwork, influenced by his experience working in funeral homes, will be on display at Vino Paradiso beginning Oct. 3 (First Wednesday Reception from 7-10 p.m. that night) through Nov. 25.

Egan takes a bit of a humorous approach to his work:
“I like to take a serious subject like death and mix it up with bright colors so that it is more inviting to the viewer. The color is what draws people in, then they realize that they are looking at a skeleton throwing up blood, I love it.”

For more about his work, check out this interesting interview at Our Art Site.

So Long, Farmers Market

One of our favorite neighborhood attractions is going away for Fall/Winter. This Thursday is the last Farmers Market of the year at Ecotrust in the Pearl. If you haven't been taking advantage of this treat all summer, you've been missing out! Stop by this Thursday, Sept. 27, from 3:30-7:30 p.m. for your last shot at stocking up on fall produce, bread, cheese and prepared foods such as tamales. And if you really start to miss your farmers market fix, remember that the Saturday market in the Park Blocks still runs through Dec. 22.

Hop Harvest Ale VIP Event

Ahhh... nothing goes hand-in-hand quite like drinking and karaoke!

This Wednesday, Sept. 26, Bridgeport Brewing Company is introducing its new Hop Harvest Ale with a special Karaoke from Hell event from 6-9 p.m.

Stop by to try the first in a series of limited edition 22 oz. brews using fresh “green” hops right from the vine. Or just to watch your neighbors sing. And for the record, no amount of Hop Harvest Ale will convince us to sing.

It's a VIP event, so please RSVP to: rsvp@bridgeportbrewing.com. Bridgeport is located at 1313 NW Marshall in the Pearl District.

Park Kitchen’s Scott Dolich Hailed by Pear Bureau

Pearl District restaurant Park Kitchen is getting kudos from the Pear Bureau. Park Kitchen’s chef/owner Scott Dolich is being featured on a special website and honored for his “flair with the pear” (Oregon’s state fruit, btw!).

This comes as no surprise, of course, as Park Kitchen is known its use of premium local and seasonal ingredients. Check out the Pear Bureau website for this yummy pear recipe from Scott.

Bishops, the Salon, in PBJ

The new Portland Business Journal features the growing Bishops brand and founder Leo Rivera, including Rivera's new salon format ("Bishops, the Salon") - just introduced in the Pearl District a few weeks ago.

The Pearl salon, with its Italian leather chairs, complimentary cocktails and reservation list, concedes that residents of the upscale neighborhood aren't likely to wait an hour for a haircut, as they sometimes do at other Bishops locations. Clients there want more service and appointments, Rivera said. "We probably wouldn't have done [a salon] anywhere but in the Pearl District," he said.

All Work, No Play

...makes Jack a dull boy us very, very sleepy. And not so good at blogging. You may have noticed how silent we've been for about a week? Sometimes our "real" work gets a bit overwhelming... we're digging out though! And just in time... a few things we're looking forward to:
-Our weekly ritual: Thursday Farmers Market in the Pearl
-Chanterelle Mushroom and Duck Confit Pizza with Gruyere on Friday (who knew we'd actually be looking forward to spending Friday night at the grocery store?!)
-Major deals at this Saturday's PDX Collective Warehouse Sale!

First Thursday with F.E.Z.

This month's First Thursday is jam-packed with special events and openings to choose from. The first place we're stopping, however, isn't optional. From 5-9 p.m., you'll find us gettin' pretty at F.E.Z. Studio, the new beauty boutique in the Pearl.

Tonight they're hosting a "Happy Hour," so-to-speak, complete with champagne, hors d’oeuvres, and some special deals on high-end beauty products.

The owner of the shop is a celebrity make-up artist and esthetician, so you're in good hands... after he's worked his magic, you'll be ready to hit the town... or at least a few galleries. See you there!

Bishops, the Salon, Opens in Style

The corner of NW 10th and Everett is turning out to be one of our favorite destinations in the Pearl District. First came ice cream and cupcakes, and now one of the city's most fashionable salons has opened there. Bishops, the Salon - a high-end boutique brought to us by the owner of Bishops Barbershop - is now open, offering cuts, color and other salon treatments, but in a style all their own. Owner Leo Rivera designed Bishops, the Salon, to share the laid-back, rock-n-roll style of his Bishops Barbershops, but this new concept also has some features all its own. For example, guests will relax in robes and enjoy complimentary house-made “white” cocktails, hot towel treatments and chair-side booking. Rivera even created specialized music play lists to be piped throughout the salon.

Grand Opening “White Party”
The salon will roll out the red white carpet on Thursday, September 13, at 7 p.m. with a “White Party” complete with “white” cocktails, “white” hors d’oeuvres, and a bit of swag, playing off the white design palate created by Rivera.
